Change Management + Systemic Design
University of Alberta Students’ Union | 2018

CHALLENGE The University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) had a perception problem. For years the organization focused on delivering quality services without taking any credit for that work. This has led to students being unable to differentiate a UASU services from UAlberta services. Why does this matter? With the threat of possible funding changes, the UASU needed to show real value for the $50 membership fee it charged.

SOLUTION  Using a blend of IDEO and IAP2 methodologies, I took the the UASU staff and volunteers through a multi-month workshop series to frame our problem, identify key areas of focus, and develop actions to address those needs. This series involved over 100 people and culminated in an unprecedented shift in organizational priorities and strategic planning. We went from using chewing gum to plug holes to creating a holistic design and communication strategy rooted in 3 core principles: Face-to-Face Interaction, Transparency + Trust, and Non-Institutional Community Connection.

FEEDBACK  This system and it’s resulting recommendations have doubled the UASU’s social media engagement, increased communications project throughput by 200% and completely re-shaped the visual language of the organization over the past year.
